Resources for finding Cancer Support

December 27th, 2007

Going through cancer alone is not an option, Cancer Support groups are widely available and easy to find.

Without the support from family and friends while dealing with the effects of cancer and cancer treatments life can be difficult. You do not have to go through this difficult time alone. There are many resources available to support you emotionally while coping with the physical and emotional changes that you may be experiencing. Many people dealing with the same issues that you are facing may also need your companionship just as much as you need theirs and they can be found right in your own community. So don’t despair cancer support groups and programs are there.

Your local health care facilities can offer suggestions as well as clergy and local support groups that will assist you in feeling a sense of control of your situation. Cancer support is offered in the form of individual counseling or group sessions that focus on educating you about treatments or coping with feelings. Some of these groups will include family members of patients while others will concentrate on specific kinds of cancers.

The fastest and easiest method of locating the kind of cancer support for your needs is to search the yellow pages in your area or online searches. There are even telephone support groups and cancer support groups located online to ensure your anonymity if that is more comfortable for you. One such organization is Cancer Care, Inc. which offers telephone cancer support and information. But this is not the only one. Use other resources such as community newspapers, directories, and nearby hospitals to lead you to the cancer support group that will best suit you.

Cancer Treatment: Radiation

December 20th, 2007

Radiation therapy is often today used as a treatment for cancer. But how many of us know exactly how does it actually work? In radiation therapy, radiation is used for destroying the cancer cells and there by shriveling the tumor. This therapy could be administered either internally using brachytherapy or externally using an external beam radio-therapy (EBRT). The main aim of radiation is to impair the cancer cells in the targeted area by disrupting their genetics so that their growth is stopped. Radiation therapy is also known as radio-therapy, X-ray therapy or irradiation. In radio-therapy both the cancer cells as well as the normal cells are damaged, but the normal damaged cells recover and start functioning like normal.

Nowadays cancer radiation therapy is used for treating almost all types of solid tumors, from breast cancer to prostate or leukemia and lymphoma. The dose of radiation to be given is decided by the doctors after examining various important factors like the radio-sensitivity of the cancer type, the tissues and organs near the affected are that could be damaged by radiation. Therefore radiation therapy cancer treatment has its share of side-effects and the patient should be aware of it and should consult it with his/her doctor.

Cancer Treatment: Surgery

December 20th, 2007

Theoretically if the tumor is removed completed from the affected body by surgery, then cancer could be cured, but unfortunately in reality this is not the case. For example if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body before the surgery then it becomes almost impossible to cure the disease by surgery. According to cancer progression in the Halstedian model, the tumor first grows locally, then metastasizes by spreading to the lymph nodes and then finally to the other parts of the body. Due to this surgery became popular for the small cancers, but these small tumors are being now recognized as metastatic.

Prostatectomy (Prostate cancer) and mastectomy (breast cancer) are some examples of surgery. The major aim during a surgical procedure is to eradicate either the entire organ or just the tumor. Being invisible to the human eye, even one cancer cell can multiply to grow into a tumor. This process is known as recurrence. Due to this reason doctors ask for a pathological report of the specimen to find out if there are some healthy tissues present, there by reducing the chances of the cancer cell being left behind in the patient’s body.

Cancer Treatment: Targeted Therapy

December 17th, 2007

Targeted therapy treatment works on the basis of blocking the growth of the cancer. This is achieved by targeting specific molecules that are required for carcinogenesis and the growth of the tumor. Since this treatment affects specific targeted molecules instead of all the rapidly dividing cells, it is far more effective and the damaged caused to the normal cells unlike the current treatments is much lesser.

This cancer treatment was started in the late 90’s and ever since its first use it has undoubtedly made a substantial impact on cancer treatments. In one type of targeted therapy, small peptides are used. They cling onto the cell surface receptors or the affected area surrounding the tumor. These peptides act like “homing devices” and they have radio-nuclides attached to them. These radio-nuclides start decaying and eventually killing the cancer cell.

Another type of targeted therapy is the Photodynamic therapy (PDT). This is a ternary treatment having three important components a photosensitizer, tissue oxygen, and light (often using lasers). PDT is often used for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or lung cancer treatment and they are also very helpful in eradicating traces of cancer tissues after a surgery is performed for removing a large tumor.

Cancer Treatment: Immunotherapy

December 17th, 2007

Cancer immunotherapy uses ones own immune system to help it fight cancer. Basically in this therapy the immune system is made to recognize and then to attack and destroy the tumor cells that cause the disease. This is can be achieved in two ways either by immunization where in the immune system is trained or by administrating therapeutic antibody where the antibodies are recruited to the immune system for destroying the tumor cells.

Basically cancer immunotherapy is a diversified set of therapeutic strategies devised to help our own immune system to fight against the tumor. Since our immune system is so complex and so effective that once trained many types of tumor cells are destroyed by our own immune system itself. Intravesical BCG immunotherapy is one of the modern methods of producing an immune response against cancer tumor for superficial bladder cancer.

There is an extensive research currently going on for creating vaccines to produce a specific immune response against tumors. Example Sipuleucel-T, it is something like a vaccine which strategizes in loading ‘prostatic acid phosphatase’ peptides in dendritic cells of the patient, so as to generate a specific immune response against prostate cancer cells.

Alternative medicine from the backyard to the research center

December 14th, 2007

Alternative medicine is not a following that has sprung up overnight; it is not even one that could be considered in any way new. It is instead one that has been both our grandparents’ teachings and their grandparents before that. Alternative medicine is the name given to any drug, chemical, herb or treatment method that has not been practiced or approved by conventional medical institutions. As you can guess, most of the old remedies for various illnesses and sicknesses are classed as alternative medicine, and even today we can still find them being practiced in some houses. Some of the more common examples of alternative medicine treatments at home revolve around using common grasses and plants grown around the home to make various teas, which are supposed to cleanse our bodies.

Alternative medicine does however form the underlying basis of most of the existing drugs and chemical treatments now used by conventional medicines – most common cures and remedies used and practiced in the traditional homes are based on the experience that they do really ‘work’. Modern medicine is constantly trying to isolate the compounds within each of these ‘bush wonders’ in an attempt to find new and efficient methods of treating new and existing viruses, diseases and other ailments.

A Compendium on Cancer

December 11th, 2007

Over 13% of the total worlds population die from cancer and yet many of us don’t know what exactly cancer is. Cancer is a collection of diseases where cells are constantly growing and dividing way beyond the limits which could be stated as normal (these cell are called aggressive cells), cells could also start destroying tissues next to them (known as invasive cells) or start spreading over to other parts of the body (know as metastatic cells).

Over the years after a lot of research, various treatments have been discovered by the scientists and many treatments are still on experimental basis. These treatments differ according to the cancer stage and the general state of the patient. To state a few treatments would be surgery, monoclonal antibody therapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy or other methods.

The aim of these cancer treatments is to remove the cancer from the affected part of the body without damaging the other parts. At time surgery could achieve this, but as we stated the properties of cancer cells earlier which are aggressive, invasive and metastatic often reduces the effectiveness of surgery. All treatments have their pros and cons, but the doctors always aim to eliminate this disease by choosing the appropriate treatment.

Uniting against Cancer

December 11th, 2007

All across the world people are realizing the seriousness of this problem and are joining hands together to create various means of awareness among the masses. Cancer special centers and cancer hospitals have been setup by people all across the world to help the affected ones. They provide them help by supporting them in all means, financially, professionally and domestic help etc. As we know cancer treatment are very expensive, there are centers specifically to help financing the cancer patient.

Now the question comes to your mind how would you detect if someone is infected with cancer or not? Here are some common symptoms that one should look for to find out if someone is infected with cancer or not.

Tiredness (fatigue):
Feeling exhausted and finds it difficult to complete everyday chores, feeling a lot of weakness or cannot remember simple things and finds the memory decreasing.

Eating problems or Changes to your sense of taste:
Doesn’t feel like eating or even hates the sight and smell of food. One might feel change in their taste of food.

Feeling sick (nausea):
Sometimes Cancer causes nausea. Like feeling sick or feel like vomiting.

Anxiety and depression:
Anxiety and depression are two very common symptoms to cancer. Your concentration and sleep can be affected by feeling depressed, and in turn you start feeling lethargic and tired.
