Robotic Treatment For Prostate Cancer
February 28th, 2008Days of radiation therapy, chemotherapy or surgery have all gone now for the treatment of prostate cancer. Research has done something that can be seen in fiction movies or novels this new treatment is called robotic prostatectomy or robotic prostate surgery.
This cancer treatment involves a series of robotic arms that remove the entire prostate while the surgeons remain in the room and guide these arms during surgery. Surgeons do not have to open up the body, a few incisions allow the robotic arms through, and these incisions are smaller than the ones that were made through prostate surgery previously.
This type of surgery is less painful and bleeding is less and the side effects are the same that occur with regular prostate surgery like urinary incontinence and sexual problems.
Though these side effects are temporary which can last for a few months even robotic prostate surgery cannot prevent these side effects, some have even caused liver damage due to hormone therapy. The down side of this is that it is not widely practiced and many prostate cancer sufferers have to travel out of state to get this procedure performed. Robotic prostatectomy is still the best option.
