Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment
January 29th, 2008This is the disease that is receiving the maximum attention of Researchers in Medicine. There is a new treatment called the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, (HIFU). Unlike most cancer treatments HIFU involves no surgery, has negligible side effects and requires no lengthy hospital stay.
What is this HIFU and how does this cancer treatment work? In this treatment the cancer is looked at with a high quality but low power ultrasound scanner and this is focused on a point within the tumor to heat the cancer cells to a temperature where they die. The patient is just given a general anesthetic and has to stay in the hospital only for a night. They are given a pain reliever afterwards and sometimes an effect similar to sunburn is experienced, but this soon disappears.
This new type of cancer treatment is safe and reliable with minimal side effects and because it is a non-invasive treatment there is no external scarring. The cancers are killed without the need for radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The areas which cannot be treated with HIFU would definitely need chemotherapy and radiation.
With HIFU it may be no surprise that the text books on cancer treatment are being rewritten in the future.
